“When Ripples Becomes Waves”, the theme of Earth Day @ ITE CE on April 25th has certainly been fulfilled with thousands of students from ITE and the neighboring primary and secondary schools thronged the exhibitions and participated in many of its competitions and activities such as talk, games and free tour to NeWater plant. This event was organized by the Entrepreneur Club and Environment Club in ITE College East at Simei.

In Green Charity Drive competition, students from 5 secondary schools collected thousands of plastic bottles and aluminum cans in a week to raise fund for Metta Welfare Association. Nan Chiau Secondary emerged as the champion in this competition while CHIJ at Katong and Pinyi Secondary took the second and third prize respectively. More than four hundred dollar was raised.

In Art Card Competition, children from 9 primary schools depicted on a 16x16cm art card their ideas of a small habit change they can make at home to save the environment. Casuarina, East Coast, and Chong Zhen Primary schools swept the top 3 prizes. Together with other top 7 cards, 500 sets of the top 10 designs will be printed and distributed to all primary schools in Singapore. The idea is to have children teaching children and spreading the message on environment issues.

ITE students also got a chance to do their parts to support the green cause. Their creativity and ingenious ideas were reflected in keenly-fought Green Video Clip Contest sponsored by biofuel manufacturer Alpha Synovate Pte Ltd. After much deliberation, team led by student Oh Aik Hong from School of Engineering clinched the top award while both the 2nd and 3rd prizes went to the Mohammad Nurhafizul and Ben Teaw ZhiQiang from the School of EIT respectively.

The 3 exhibitions put up by Lapis Lazuli Light, ITE Art Club, and other private organizations dealing in green products and services have pulled in big crowd and received many compliment. “I am very impressed by the breadth of this exhibition which includes excellent works from Lapis, primary schools and ITE students. The theme of this event is very apt and I am sure it has created the ripples reaching out to many,” Joe Lim from Singapore Environment Council commented.

One of the highlight in this event was the launching and gracing of Green Bank by ITC CE’s principal, Dr Ricky Tam. Green Bank is a 2-in-1 recycling machine with capability to compress and separate plastic bottles and aluminum cans. It comes with a touch-screen interactive LCD screen that allows users to form teams to compete amongst themselves and choose the charity organizations they wish to donate the Green Points to. It is essentially a recycling and fundraising tool that let users to do two good deeds in one go. Felicia Wee, marketing manager of Metta Welfare Association, has expressed keen interest in collaborating with ITE to use Green Bank in its future fundraising events.
